can I sit for the cpa exam right after graduation and then completer the work history?

I am trying to find out if it is possible to take the cpa exm right after graduation and complete the work history qualification during and after.

My understanding is that in most states you can sit for the CPA exam as soon as you meet the education requirement, but you will not be a "true" CPA until achieving the work experience.
