I will begin working as an entry-level staff accountant/auditor for a large, regional accounting firm. How far up the ranks can I get without passing the CPA?

The answer varies by ‘large regional firm,’ but typically you cannot become a manager if you have not passed the CPA exam. Some will not promote you to a Senior/Supervisor position if you have not passed the CPA exam, or will require you to pass the exam within 12, 18 or 24 months of being promoted to Senior/Supervisor to ‘encourage’ you to get the credentials you really need to advance as a professional public accountant.
In any case, getting your CPA credentials is a good idea if you want a career in any aspect of accounting. Just look at the employment ads and see how many senior-level jobs require CPA credentials.
I hope this helps.
It depends on what they require.
It really depends on THEIR policies, but most firms will not let you become a manager without being a CPA.
